Does shampooing leave carpet sticky?

Sometimes, yes. Old rotary shampoo whipped detergent into foam and brushed it through the pile. If nothing rinses that out, surfactant stays in the yarn. It dries tacky. Soil bonds to it, and traffic lanes gray out again within weeks. The method matters more than the word.

Sand comes first. Dry beach sand buries itself at the yarn base and acts like sandpaper. Wetting it before you remove it makes mud. Slow dry vacuum passes, in two directions, before any solution goes down.

Fiber decides the chemistry. Cut-pile nylon and polyester in 1950s–80s homes handles hot water extraction with a real rinse. Glue-down commercial loop in apartment corridors does better with low-moisture encapsulation. The polymer dries to a brittle crystal and leaves with the next vacuuming. Wool, jute and sisal need pH control. Alkaline shampoo browns wool and can bleed dyes, so those rugs clean and dry flat off-site.

Drying is the hard part near the water. Marine humidity is already high, interior condo units get little cross-ventilation, and there is no basement or dry air to pull moisture. Air movers and dehumidification run until the pad reads dry, not until the surface feels dry.
